The island of Samothrace (Σαμοθράκη) is one of the northeastern Aegean islands of Greece, located only 32 kilometers southwest of the main port of Greece in Thrace - Aleksandrupoli. The island has a length of 17 kilometers and an area of only 178 sqare kilometers. The population is about 2 500 inhabitants. The main local activities are fishing and tourism. The island of Samothrace is the mountain Fegari (φεγγάρι), which is the highest among the islands in the Aegean Sea. Her Homer says that Poseidon stood there to watch battles during the Troyan war.
